We want to add to the customer's overall experience of the region, and promoting local food and car-free days out is an easy and obvious way of doing that.

Buy Local, Try Local

Choose local food and drink and gifts made in the region. The South West is renowned for its excellent local produce and quality products. Buying local gives a true taste of the South West, supports the local economy and reduces the distance food and goods are transported.

Why campaign for visitors to buy local?

Promoting the local economy makes economic, social and environmental sense while adding to the visitor's overall experience.

The South West is known for its exceptional local produce. Buying fresh, quality local food and drink that is distinct to the region, gives the visitors an experience that sets the South West apart from other regions. Our reputation as a region of quality local food and drink also makes the South West well placed to tap into the increased interest and growth of food tourism.

Our environment
Our landscape and environment reflect the way we produce food and other goods. Supporting local food and drink production can help protect our unique and distinct environment.

Less food miles
The more produce sourced and consumed locally the less that we need to bring in by road from outside the region. This means less traffic, reduced fuel consumption, single drop offs and often less packaging. Food miles are identified as a significant contributory factor in climate change, so the less our food travels, the better.

Supporting the local economy
Every pound spent in the local economy has a beneficial knock on effect of keeping local jobs and prosperity in the region. For businesses, sourcing local produce can also be a marketing opportunity, an added selling point.

Future Footprints aims to take advantage of current consumer interest and to help visitors make consumer choices which not only add to their experience on holiday but also generate a 'feel good' factor linking buying local to helping to 'keep the South West special.'

National and regional reports point towards the growing consumer interest in local food and drink. According to research into 'Tourist attitudes towards regional & local foods' (Enteleca Research & Consultancy), 72% of people visiting the South West take an interest in local foods during their visit.

A recent Customer satisfaction survey undertaken by South West Tourism (2004), found two particular visitor groups, the pre-family and the young-family markets, identified organic and quality local food as one of our region's strengths.

In addition, the region has seen a significant growth in local and regional food and drink events and farmers markets.
