Background Info
Future Footprints is a partnership of organisations in the South West that support sustainable tourism. Our vision is a thriving sustainable tourism industry that satisfies the aspirations of visitors, businesses and the community without damaging the quality of our region's special environment.
Current projections suggest visitor numbers could grow by up to 39% over the decade (Towards 2015 Market Forecasts - State of Tourism Report).
Future Footprints is one small part of the helping to make tourism more sustainable. It recognises that we can maximise the positive impact of tourism and reduce the negative impact by encouraging visitors to take simple steps to help 'keep the South West special'.
Future Footprints focuses on adding to the visitors' experience and helping them to have a better holiday. The project encourages visitors to: * buy local food, drink and gifts. * check out what's on their doorstep and to see the region by bus, ferry, train, bike and foot.
Why Future Footprints? The local economy not only provides jobs and supports communities but also reduces the need to transport produce across the region. Visitors can to add to their experience by trying local produce and by visiting local attractions and cultural events.
Over 80% of visitors come to the South West by car. With your help we can help them reduce their car use once they are in the region. Join the campaign and let visitors know what is within walking distance of where they are staying, or the great ways they can see the region by bus, train, ferry, foot or bike. |
Future Footprints is co-ordinated by Sustainability South West, the region's independent champion of sustainable development. It is currently funded by the Regional Development Agency through a partnership agreement with South West Tourism and has recieved contributions from the Eden Project and Natural England. |
